First VisitAt Oahu Pediatric Dentistry, we want to make sure your kids are as comfortable as possible when they come to us. The first visit to a dentist can be quite scary for young children. Our team will do what they can to help make sure your kids know that there is no need to be scared and that we are there to help. When you first arrive at our office, we want to get to know you all so we can help make you feel more comfortable. Try to get here before your appointment so we can complete your paperwork slowly and carefully as well as understand your current situation properly before the actual dental examination. What Happens During the First Examination? On a first visit, we're looking to understand your kid's full health history to figure out their needs, if any. Young children won't have much of dental history, so there is usually not much to learn in that regard. On the first visit, it's most common to get a thorough cleaning simply, so we will make sure to scrape areas that might usually be missed with a daily routine. We will make sure to do this as carefully as possible with kids to keep them comfortable. We will also fully examine their teeth, gums, and mouth to make sure there are no underlying diseases or problems. We want to identify and treat issues as soon as they arise so we can keep them from becoming serious, and help ensure they maintain excellent oral health. It is unlikely that we will find any significant problems on a child's first visit. If we do find something, though, then we might want to perform an x-ray to evaluate the extent of the problem. Any further action will be discussed with you thoroughly before we do anything. On a child's first visit, we will also focus a great deal on educating them on maintaining their oral hygiene. This will include talking to them about brushing and flossing, and explaining why they are important. Make sure you ask every question you might have. This is the perfect opportunity for you to get all the answers you need about your kid's oral health and care. Don't be afraid to ask since every question is valid and we will make sure to answer all of them, so you leave our office well-informed, satisfied and confident for your next visit. How Long Should I Wait Until their Next Visit? If your kid has healthy teeth and gums, they will be good to go for another three to six months. Sometimes, though, we might want to see them earlier just to check-up on how things are going. We will let you know at the time when we suggest you should make your next appointment with us.
